Match report

Alport 0 Alsager Town 3

Whitchurch crashed out of the League Cup against fellow promotion hopefuls, Alsager Town, who eased to a 3-0 victory at Yockings Park on Monday night.

A 12th minute free kick from Danny Shelley went past Dan Read from 22 yards and that was the way it stayed until the interval. But two further goals in quick succession from Mickey Lennon and Jordan Cobley before the hour made it a night to forget for the Reds, who seldom looked like turning the game around.

Josh Glover was fouled on the edge of the ‘D’ which looked like a soft award, but Shelley confidently beat the wall to find the bottom of Read’s net. In a physical encounter, there were a plethora of yellow cards as Alsager used strong arm tactics to try and knock Whitchurch off their stride. But Alport stood up to that challenge to suggest they might force their way back into the contest.

But those quickfire goals knocked the stuffing out of Luke Goddard’s side even though they improved once the result was beyond doubt.

There were occasions when the deficit might have been clawed back most notably when it took an incredible goalline clearance from Glover to keep out Matty Ashbrook’s shot with 20 minutes remaining. And Si Everall’s miss in stoppage time when he was clean through just about summed up Alport’s evening.

They enjoyed an equal share of possession and put plenty of crosses into the box, but Town keeper Ryan Goodwin came to claim pretty much everything aerially.

The difference between the two sides on the night was down to confidence – Alsager are flying at the moment with Whitchurch mis-firing somewhat – and the clinical finishing of the visitors attack. With Luke Walley sidelined through injury and fellow striker Ben Mills hobbling out of the action early in the second 45, the Reds attacking options appear limited at the moment.

Alport came close to securing a major scalp a fortnight ago with Northwich Victoria eventually going through on penalties in the Macron Cup. But the reality of it here, as Alport exited a second Cup competition in as many weeks, is that Alsager were rarely troubled and fully deserved to book their place in the Quarter Finals of the competition.
