Telford Juniors 2 Alport 3
On a wet night in Wellington, Alport progressed to the Quarter Finals of the TJ Vickers County Cup with a hard fought 3-2 win against Telford Juniors.
The Reds expected a physical challenge from the West Midlands Regional First Division side and so it proved with a flurry of cards with most of them going to the hosts.
In the end, the extra quality shone through and Whitchurch never looked likely to lose the match and were always in control on the heavy pitch.
They got off to the best start possible when Jimmy Garlick shot through a crowd of players to find the net and although Telford responded with a 17th minute penalty awarded for a foul by Ant Tinsley, Alport went back in front with a good goal five minutes before the break. Si Everall put in a great ball and young Luke Walley met it on the volley to steer the ball home from close range.
After the break Alport continued to dominate possession but couldn't add to their lead and Juniors levelled for a second time midway through the half when Tinsley conceded a free kick and the delivery made its way to the back post where it was rammed into the net.
The Reds keeper Cam Phelps was barely threatened all night long and yet had conceded two goals he was powerless to do anything about. The winning goal came 17 minutes from time and from an unlikely source, with Tinsley making up for his earlier mistimed tackles. The centre back's first goal in a red jersey was enough to settle the tie in Alport's favour - much to the delight of the vast majority of the crowd.
