Match report

Alport 1 Altrincham 1

Luke Walley continued his flying start to pre-season by netting for Alport in a highly creditable 1-1 draw against Phil Parkinson’s Altrincham side. Walley had scored all three for the Reds in the win at Airbus and although Saturday’s opposition play three leagues higher than Whitchurch, it was impossible to tell based on Saturday’s showing.

Alport were without the Everall brothers (Carl and Si) who were at a family wedding, and Mike Blundell was also missing as he continues his comeback from a lengthy injury problem. PJ Hudson was also unavailable as was Keaton Webster so Alport had to rely on rolling subs with just four available on an energy sapping afternoon. No such problems for Parkinson who had the luxury of naming two sides for the friendly – which attracted an incredible 550 fans to Yockings Park!

Altrincham started the better of the two sides enjoying the lions share of the ball, but Alport summer signing Ben Mills was the first to get a shot away with his 25 yarder rippling the side netting. Twenty minutes into the match and the visitors went in front with James Poole’s shot taking enough of a deflection to wrong foot Rob Cooke in the home goal. Their lead lasted barely 10 minutes with Alport levelling with a fine goal. Several players were involved from a short free kick routine and when the ball was worked towards the edge of the box a brilliant flick from Mills put young Walley in behind. The striker steadied himself to casually stroke the ball past a helpless Tim Deasy to thrill the bulk of the huge crowd.

Alty responded quickly with a fine ball in from the left channel eluding the two or three yellow jerseys waiting in the box. At the other end, Nick Marley – who had a fine game - pulled a shot wide so the sides went in all square.

In the second half, Cooke made two decent stops to keep out Sam Heathcote and Sam Sheridan as Alport restricted their opponents to shots outside the box. Alty could have won it but for Stevie McNichol clearing superbly from his own goalline to prevent Heathcote again, but it would have been harsh on the Reds had they been denied a share of the spoils.
