Match report

Alport 2 Atherton LR 0

Two first half goals from Nick Marley and Simon Everall were enough to land three precious points against Atherton LR at Yockings Park. It recorded a third successive victory for an Alport side that wasn’t anywhere near their best, but the victory was still well deserved.

Matty Ashbrook clattered the right hand post inside the first two minutes and who knows what might have happened had the Reds got off to a flyer. In the end though, it was a bitty affair that few will remember, but the importance of the win shouldn’t be undervalued. It keeps Alport nicely tucked in amongst the chasing pack and it’s the sign of a good side that can land the points from a below par performance.

Goalkeepers Danny Read and Ben Purdham were rarely worked - although the Atherton stopper did lay a decent glove on the ball to deflect Everall’s 13thminute shot wide that appeared destined for the far corner.

Atherton shouted loudly for a penalty for what looked like a handball in the box but in fairness, the shot was a venomous one and struck the hand at close range. Midway through the half came the breakthrough. A good move involving Ashbrook and Everall ended with Marley arriving at just the right time to net from close range.

When the second goal came 10 minutes before half time it was probably the moment that killed off Atherton’s plucky resistance. Everall’s finish was high to Purdham’s right and was one of the few moments of genuine quality throughout a turgid 90 minutes.

As for Atherton, their one clear cut opportunity came when Jordan Arklie-Yound lifted a far post volley fractionally over the bar five minutes after Everall’s goal, but LR would not come that close again.

The second half was a non event and manager Luke Goddard had said in his programme notes that although his desire was to entertain the supporters, he was honest enough to admit that things wouldn’t always go to plan. Never would there be a better example.

This game would have put an insomniac to sleep. But Whitchurch worked hard and deserved their reward and it maintained their unbeaten home record, with 16 points now banked from the 18 available at Yockings Park.

Team: Read, Twigg (Blundell), Ledwards, Howell, Thomas, Goddard, Marley, Garlick, Everall (c) (Brown), Moss, Ashbrook
