Cammell Laird 2 Alport 2
Two Ben Mills goals in the final eight minutes earned Alport a precious away point at Kirklands. Joe Malkin and Jamie Coulbourn had given the Birkenhead side a 2-0 lead which looked unassailable at one point with the Reds staring down the barrels of a first league defeat. But you have to go back as far as January since Alport last lost a league game away from Yockings Park, and a sensational display of attacking power in the closing stages of the match had Lairds clinging on for a point in the end.
Malkin’s looping sixth minute header nestled in the far corner to get the hosts off to a great start and with Alport strangely subdued and offering little going forward, few could argue that Lairds deserved their half time lead. John Lynch only had one save of any note to make when he beat away a long range Louis James shot five minutes before the break.
But in the second half it was a completely different story. Whitchurch came out all guns blazing and were somewhat fortuitous when the referee awarded them a penalty when Luke Walley was adjudged to have been fouled in the box. With Mike Blundell having missed from the spot against Carlisle in the previous game, it was Mills who took on the responsibility from 12 yards. But just as Blundell had done against City, Mills saw his effort strike the woodwork with the goalkeeper sent the wrong way - and Alport had missed a golden chance to level on 48 minutes.
The Reds continued to push for a leveller and five minutes later, Blundell’s shot was pushed out into the path of Mills but he fired another great opportunity wide of the target from close range. Si Everall came on as sub for the last 35 minutes and his presence ended up turning the game. But not before Coulbourn had rifled a left foot shot into the bottom corner with 20 minutes left to make it 2-0.
With the game into the final 10 minutes, Everall worked wonders down the right and his great cross was acrobatically volleyed home by Mills. And two minutes later Alport ought to have levelled. Ed Moss delivered a great set piece and Everall standing no more than six yards from goal glanced a free header wide of the post!
It looked like being one of those nights until Moss picked out Mills in an almost carbon copy position, and this time the striker buried the header this time with just two minutes left. The sizeable away support went crackers and they sensed a win, but Lynch made two smart saves in stoppage time to earn his side a share of the spoils.
