Match report

Alport 5 Nelson 1

Alport returned to winning ways to record their highest home win of the year against bottom side Nelson. It was vitally important to get back to winning ways on home territory after damaging back-to-back defeats against promotion rivals Litherland REMYCA and Sandbach United. And the Reds were by and large comfortable throughout, although credit must go to Nelson for a display that might well have brought them more than the one goal they managed to score. By that time though, the result had been put beyond any doubt. Alport were three to the good by half-time with Joe Howell, Nicky Porter and Lee Pickerill all on the scoresheet. Porter added a fourth early in the second half and although Danny Mort pulled one back for the visitors, Harry Parkinson put icing on top of the cake with his first senior goal from the subs bench with just over five minutes to play.

Whitchurch got off to a flyer when Porter’s corner was expertly guided into the top corner by midfielder Joe Howell. Only six minutes had been played so the nerves were quickly settled. Ben Mills fired just wide soon after but Danny Read was called upon to preserve the lead when Chris Turner fired one off from the edge of the box.

Alport went so close to doubling their lead just before the half hour when Mills and Aaron Johns both clattered the post within seconds of each other. Nelson happily cleared their lines but when Porter’s corner came in, it eluded everyone to make it 2-0. Turner brought another fine save from Read five minutes before the break but by the time the half time whistle was sounded, the hosts had gone three up. A fortunate ricochet during a Nelson attack allowed Pickerill to run at the defence and once he’d beaten the last man, his shot just about found the net despite Marcel Wusiewicz’s best efforts to save.

Once the second half resumed, Porters attempted cross flew over the Nelson stopper and into the far corner but Mort’s flicked header gave the away side a glimmer of hope from a corner. The substitute was a threat for the time he spent on the pitch and ought to have grabbed another one for the Lancashire club, with Ryan Thomas coming around to clear after good goalkeeping from Read with 20 minutes still to play.

Alport finished the game well after Kieran Dermaine’s dismissal for two yellows, and neat play down the left involving Pickerill and Louis James, saw the former deliver a superb ball across the six yard box to gift Parkinson a goal with six minutes left.

The result keeps Alport in third place in the First Division table despite the clubs around them all recording victories.
