Match report

Alport 5 New Mills AFC 0

A hat-trick from skipper Simon Everall helped Alport record their biggest league win of the season at a rain soaked Yockings Park. Recent new signings Joe Howell and Jimmy Garlick were also among the goals as Whitchurch dominated proceedings for huge chunks of the game.

Alport began the match on fire and Dean Twigg and Everall could both have scored inside of five minutes. But almost as soon as Howell had buried a 6th minute header past Liam Flynn from an Ed Moss corner, the Millers were facing an uphill battle that they never looked remotely like winning. Just before the half hour mark the Reds doubled their advantage when a superb pass from Nick Marley sent Everall into a dangerous position. Once he’d bamboozled the defender to create a clear opening, he lashed the ball across Flynn and into the far corner. Manager Luke Goddard immediately replaced himself with Joe Minshall who was making his comeback from a broken wrist, but it didn’t affect the way that Alport went about their business. Nathan Neequaye went closest for the visitors with a left foot shot that went just wide, and Flynn denied Everall in first half stoppage time with another decent stop.

After the break, the home side continued as they’d left off and Everall’s second was a perfectly executed lob from the edge of the box, which sailed over Flynn as well as a defender standing on the goalline to dip just under the bar for 3-0.

The fourth came just five minutes later and what a goal it was! Matty Ashbrook played the ball into Luke Walley who laid it off to Ben Mills. The striker held it up before squaring for Garlick who was less than a minute into his debut having come on from the bench. The ferocity of his shot flew past the sprawling figure of Flynn with still half an hour to play.

Michael Jones saw a header smash against the face of the bar which was the closest that the away side came to scoring, although Danny Read – awarded First Division Goalkeeper of the Month for August ahead of kick-off - did make a couple of routine saves. Flynn saved well from Howell but the icing on the cake came minutes from the end when Everall skipped clear of a high defence to comfortably round the exposed Flynn, before rolling the ball into the unguarded goal.

This was Alport’s best performance of the season to date and yet there’s still plenty more to come from the boys in Red, who have added quality and depth to an already impressive squad.
