Match report

Alport 2 Cheadle Town 0

A goal in each half from new signing, Arron Johns, and another from skipper Si Everall helped Alport to maintain their excellent home form with this scruffy win against Cheadle at a chilly Yockings. Defeats in their last two league outings might have set the alarm bells ringing but Johns’ early goal helped remove any lingering nerves that Luke Goddard’s side might have had. The second goal with around 16 minutes left was timely and it needed another Danny Read penalty save to preserve the clean sheet and help see out the final few minutes without the nerves being tested again.

Alport got off to a flyer when Everall’s superb raking pass forward was controlled on the chest by Johns taking him beyond the last defender and the goalkeeper before the winger coolly rolled the ball into the gaping net.

But the lead was threatened when gaffer Luke Goddard lost his footing on a glue-pot of a pitch only to be bailed out by Read who saved well from Adam Gardiner who was left holding his head in his hands.

At the other end, Everall saw a shot beaten away by Dan Whiting in the Town goal and Joe Howell lifted a shot too high as the half time whistle approached.

At the resumption, neither side managed to get any type of foothold in the match and both made a couple of substitutions to try and inject some spark into proceedings. And when sub Luke Walley broke up play on the halfway line, it led to Everall finding the bottom corner of Whiting’s net to double the lead.

But Town weren’t done, and when Jake Ambrose was upended by Read – who was the last man – it resulted in a penalty to the visitors and, thankfully, only a yellow for the Alport keeper.  Read pushed the ball out for his fourth penalty save of the season and he made another fine stop to repel Gardiner’s thunderous volley minutes later as the clock ticked down.

Everall wasted a great opportunity in the dying seconds to put a goal on a plate for Walley and the chance of a bit more icing on the cake had gone. This wasn’t vintage Whitchurch by any means but it was job done, and after an indifferent spell that was the only stat that mattered to send the vast majority of the 174 crowd home happy.
