Match report

Alsager Town 0 Alport 3

Two goals from Nick Marley, either side of a Lee Pickerill strike, earned Alport a seventh successive away win at play-off hopefuls, Alsager. Backed by around 100 noisy travelling supporters, the Reds were in control throughout most of the contest, but it was only really in the latter stages of the match that they demonstrated the gulf in class. That was partly down to the recklessness of Tom Brown whose second yellow card of the evening left Town short on numbers. And but for goalkeeper, James Coates, and some poor finishing in front of goal, Whitchurch might well have won this game by six or seven.

The deadlock was broken in the first 10 minutes and it came from Coates’ only error of the evening. Marley’s attempted cross ought to have been food and drink for the Town keeper but somehow he let it drift over him and the ball sneaked in at the far post. Pickerill missed a glorious chance to double Alport’s lead on the quarter hour but blazed wildly over, and Si Everall put a shot wide after Brown conceded possession in a dangerous area. On another night, the Reds skipper might have helped himself to a hatful of goals although he ran himself into the ground from first whistle to last.

From a Town perspective, Danny Glover brought an instinctive save from Danny Read - who did well to block a ferocious effort from no more than 10 yards out. And before the half-time whistle, Pickerill and Arron Johns both failed to hit the target when the least they should have done was work Coates.

The game turned in Alport’s favour 10 minutes into the second period when Brown saw red – literally – for a crude lunge that halted Everall in full flow. From the resultant free kick 25 yards out, Coates went full length to push away Dean Twigg’s free kick. But it took a brilliant save from Read just five minutes later when a header in a crowded area appeared destined for the bottom corner.

Sean Griffiths headed over from a Twigg corner, but on 72 minutes Pickerill drilled past Coates via a slight deflection to send the away fans into raptures. And they were soon celebrating again when their team constructed a magnificent third. A move was built down the left starting with Everall, and some lovely short passing involving Pickerill, Griffiths and Twigg worked the ball to the right hand side of the area, where Marley struck a low drive across Coates and into the bottom corner.

Coates was to deny Everall and Pickerill in one-on-one situations in the last 10 minutes, but the three points were all that mattered as Alport looked for a response from their defeat to Litherland last time out.
