Alport 0 Abbey Hulton United 0
A Bank Holiday shut-out in front of a whopping 507 crowd at Yockings Park saw Alport fail to win for the first time this season. Visitors Abbey Hulton clearly came set up to take a point home with them and their tactics paid off from a hard fought goalless draw. The visitors only looked like scoring once when Kieron Ball looked set to capitalise on a defensive slip but goalkeeper Danny Read had read the danger and sprung from his line to save well with his legs. That was right at the end of the first half which was completely dominated by the hosts.
Mike Blundell came closest with a text book 25 yard free kick that bounced down off the underside of the crossbar midway through the first half, but he was guilty of missing Alport’s best chance just before Ball’s miss. Skipper Si Everall danced down the right flank and laid a goal on a plate for Blundell, but from just 5 yards out and no defender in sight, Blundell somehow sent the ball flying over the bar to earn the visitors a reprieve.
In the second half it was a similar story with Whitchurch dominating possession but unable to break down a well marshalled United defence. Another great chance presented itself just seven minutes into the half. Luke Walley was sent in behind but the youngster’s attempt was a hurried one and went straight into the grateful arms of Birkenshaw.
After that it was a non-event in many ways. Alport tried personnel changes having named a stunningly impressive bench. And just when it looked like no more chances would come, a glorious one came straight to the feet of top scorer, Ben Mills standing just 8 yards from goal. What a time for Millsy to connect with fresh air to leave everyone in the ground rubbing their eyes.
Perhaps this was two points dropped for Alport but there will be many more occasions this season where the Reds will end up frustrated having dominated proceedings. As for United, few could argue that they worked tirelessly throughout and perhaps they deserved their share of good fortune to take away a point.
