Match report

Alport’s six game unbeaten run was blown away by a terrific Widnes side in midweek. Another superb turnout at Yockings Park (161) were treated to a really entertaining game by two good sides. But on the night, pre-season title favourites Widnes showed clearly that they were worthy of that tag after a stuttering start to the campaign. The Cheshire side have stumbled at their magnificent Select Security Stadium – the Reds won 3-1 there at the start of last month – but on the road they’ve been superb. They arrived in Shropshire full of confidence after putting five past Alsager in their previous game. And to prove that was no fluke, they repeated the feat at Yockings with a display that was by far and away the most impressive Alport have faced this term. The visitors were a threat throughout but it was Whitchurch who were first to show. Dean Twigg had a decent chance after just three minutes but pulled his right foot shot wide of the far post. And Widnes soon nosed in front when Kev Towey sent a great cross to the back post and Chris Lomax scored the first of his three goals with a fine header back across Danny Read in the Alport goal. But Alport came back into it although their goal was somewhat fortuitous when it came. Richie Mottram came through traffic to claim a high ball but spilled it and there was young Ryan Thomas to stab home his first goal for the club from close range. The celebrations were soon brought to a halt when some sloppy play in their own half saw Whitchurch lose possession, and Lomax was well placed to score via the aid of a deflection to put Widnes back in front. It looked like Alport would go into the break trailing by a single goal but they conceded their fifth penalty of the season when Luke Goddard was adjudged to have bundled over Towey on the left hand side of the penalty box. The striker took the kick himself and buried it low and hard past Read to make it 1-3 at the break.New signing Louis James replaced Mike Blundell who felt a tightening of his hamstring, but before James had even broken into a sweat Widnes had gone further ahead, with skipper Kev Pollard heading in unmarked from a 49th minute corner. With the 90 minutes almost up the referee spotted a handball allowing Dan Tinsley to confidently stroke home the resultant pen and give Alport the slightest glimmer of hope. But far from being content to sit on their lead hoping to see the game out; Widnes scored a fifth with Lomax completing his hat-trick with a fine shot into the top corner. It could have got even worse for the battle weary Reds with Read pulling off a superb save to keep out George Lomax in the final few seconds of the game. Joey Dunn’s side could yet still be crowned Champions if the new manager continues to get the best out of a side that were different class, on what was a difficult night for Whitchurch.
