Alport 3 Holker Old Boys 0
A routine win in the sunshine against Holker Old Boys avenged a 3-0 defeat earlier in the season, and kept Aport’s promotion dreams very much alive. Two early goals from Stevie McNichol and Si Everall eased any tension amongst the home fans and a third on the hour from substitute Mike Blundell completed a very comfortable win.
On a baking hot day, most of the supporters were in shirt sleeves and they saw their team dominate throughout. And Alport got off to a perfect start when goalkeeper Elliot Maxfield fouled Si Everall in the box and McNichol coolly tucked away his second of the season from the spot. On the quarter hour Everall turned the defender and found the far corner of the net to take his tally to 28 for the campaign. At 2-0 the Reds were coasting and they quickly had a chance to make it three. Impressive youngster Luke Walley went clear but his attempt to dink the ball over the on-rushing Maxfield was well saved by the Holker number one. Everall and Alex Hughes both had chances to stretch the home side’s lead but it remained 2-0 at the break.
Whitchurch – missing Luke Goddard, Elliot Ledwards and Matty Ashbrook from their squad made a half-time change with Louis James withdrawn for Blundell and it was the latter who stretched Alport’s lead with a deflected strike on the hour mark. And fifteen minutes from time, only the upright denied Blundell a stunning second when his ferocious volley clattered against the post.
Holker offered nothing and were a shadow of the side that had recorded back to back victories over the Reds in League and Cup earlier in the season. You sensed there were a few more gears that Alport could have gone through, but clever squad rotation saw six points banked in less than 48 hours; ahead of Tuesday night’s trip to relegation haunted Ashton Town.
