Whitchurch Alport 0 Charnock Richard 2
A first half strike early on and a second half rebound from a penalty, were enough to condemn Whitchurch Alport to a 2-0 home defeat against Charnock Richard. David Burrows stabbed home from close range after just 10 minutes past Alport keeper Danny Read - who was making his first start for the Reds. And after player manager Luke Goddard was penalised for handball in the box, it brought a second for the away side. Danny Smith’s spot kick was pushed out by Read but with many of the Alport players standing still and looking content to applaud Read’s sterling work, Carl Grimshaw headed the loose ball towards the back stick and there was sub Mitch Leece to strike from a few yards to make it 2-0.
Once Burrows had put the away team ahead, they should have scored again within five minutes when Grimshaw had a fantastic chance to double the Lancastrian’s lead. But the burly striker skewed his shot wide when he looked certain to score in what was a massive let off for Alport. The Reds were under a good deal of pressure for much of the first half as the conditions worsened with the winds and rain swirling around Yockings Park. In the closing stages, Stevie McNichol stuck out a leg to divert a Ryan Thomas mishit goalwards, but the foot of the post saved Charnock. Whitchurch made a double switch during the interval with George Ward coming on for Joe Evans and Alex Hughes sent out to replace Thomas who’d had a quiet afternoon. But before Alport could impose themselves, Goddard’s arm made contact with the ball to prevent the cross from going into the mix and the player boss was booked for the offence. Read stood up well to Smith’s pen but the keeper was furious with his teammates when Leece had all the time in the world to make it two - with statuesque figures in red all miles away from being in a position to challenge.
To be fair to Alport, they fought hard and saw more of the ball in the second half. Skipper Si Everall saw a shot turned over by Adam Halton who made his only save of the afternoon with less than ten minutes remaining, but the game ended badly for Reds midfielder McNichol who was shown a straight red for tangling with Josh Norgate.
