Match report

For the second time this season, Alport thrashed Eccleshall by a five goal margin to stay in amongst the leading pack of the First Division. And although the 5-0 win at Yockings back in August was a comfortable one, this performance at Pershore Park was verging on the subliminal. From the moment the referee put his lips to the whistle to start the game, to the moment he put the hosts out of their misery 90 odd minutes later, Whitchurch relentlessly tore at the home defenders. At times they were happy to hoof the ball clear, merely to gain some respite from the wave of attacks from the team in Red. The front four of Mike Blundell, Alex Hughes, Si Everall and Matty Ashbrook were at it from the off and looked unplayable at times. Make no mistake, but for Stuart Robertson in the Eccleshall goal - who made world class saves to keep out a Blundell free-kick and a Stevie McNichol header - the score would easily have reached double figures. And with the metalwork saving Eccleshall on three separate occasions, the beleaguered hosts must have been elated to only ship five. Incredibly, Alport didn’t manage to find a breakthrough until just past the half hour when joint player-manager Carl Everall headed home from inside the 6 yard box, from a Hughes corner. Minutes later Ashbrook finished clinically into the far corner, after running at a full back who was turned inside out that many times on the night, they might still be unscrewing him from the turf a week later! The Alport fans were providing outstanding vocal support in between both dugouts under a covered enclosure that amplified their noisy support. And they were further rewarded when skipper Si Everall smashed home a third early in the second half. Blundell poached a fourth on 64 minutes from Ashbrook’s precision corner, with Alport continuously chasing the home defenders like a hare with a rabbit. On the lush surface, some of the Reds’ football was scintillating and they gave arguably one of their best performances for many a year – probably since the club’s heyday back in the 70’s. Shots wide, shots blocked, shots saved – the possession stats must have been 80% minimum in Alport’s favour. Sub Dan Tinsley glanced in a header from a beautiful delivery in from Carl Everall and that completed Alport’s nap hand with 11 minutes to go. Every one of the 60 or so Whitchurch fans that travelled the short distance to Staffordshire will remember this night for a very long time. It registered an eighth consecutive away victory for the Yockings Men to set them up nicely for the weekend trip to Silsden.
