Bacup Borough 0 Alport 0
It was very much a case of after the Lord Mayor’s Show for Alport over in East Lancashire. The weather was as miserable as the performance which was light years from the one given in midweek at Ashton, where Alport ran riot in a 9-0 win. But a tricky pitch that had a horrible slope was anything but conducive to the Reds usual style of play and it showed. They barely troubled Louis McCarthy in the home goal throughout and but for Danny Read, the point they did gain might have been frittered away. Benjamin Boyne was thwarted by Read with the clearest cut opening of the entire 90 minutes which came just before the hour. Read did brilliantly to deny the centre forward who looked set to inflict maximum damage from the one chance the hosts managed to create in the whole 90 minutes.
At the other end, the Reds huffed and they puffed but seldom looked capable of breaking down a stubborn home defence. Alport managed to hold most of the possession and worked the ball into wide areas on plenty of occasions but the final quality was lacking. Sixty goal pairing Si Everall and Mike Blundell were off the pace although Blundell saw a first half shot flash wide, and despite Whitchurch winning a plethora of free-kicks in menacing areas, they didn’t manage to penetrate on a hugely frustrating afternoon at the Brian Boys West View Stadium. An abdominal injury to young centre-half Joe Minshall merely served to make it an even more disappointing afternoon for the Yockings Park men.
