Match report

Alport 2 Atherton LR 1
Two second half goals from Si Everall and Matty Ashbrook maintained Alport’s promotion hopes in front of another bumper Yockings Park crowd. 269 packed the ground and were rewarded with a 2-1 win against Atherton LR whose performance belied their lowly league position. Ashbrook’s goal was a historical one as it was the hundredth registered by the club in the North West Counties League. And despite a ridiculous amount of time being added by the referee at the end, Alport survived one or two scares in those last seven minutes to get the job done, and bring to an end a three game losing streak.

The Reds were nearly in front after 20 seconds when the skipper was sent through on goal but Louis Murray made a fine save. It was the first of several made by the Atherton stopper who proved to be Si’s nemesis until that second half goal. Danny Read made his first save after 19 minutes when David Moore tried his luck from 20 yards, and in a purple spell for the home side around the half hour mark, Nick Marley, Mike Blundell and Ashbrook all went close to breaking the deadlock. And seven minutes before the interval Murray made a world class stop to turn Everall’s point blank header over the bar.

Murray continued to be a thorn in Alport’s side but they stayed patient and got their reward midway through the second half. A neat one-two with new boy PJ Hudson gave Everall a sight of goal and this time Murray was helpless as Si scored his first goal at Yockings this year. And within five minutes Whitchurch doubled their lead when the skipper beat the offside trap and delivered low for Ashbrook to tap in at the far post. The collective sigh of relief around the place was palpable but with 11 minutes to go the Reds were pegged back. Read made a superb stop to deny Theo Kidd but substitute Beck Murray was there to head home the loose ball. It made for a nervy ending with Luke Goddard fortunate not to concede a penalty when tangling with Kidd two minutes from the end of normal time. Everall, Marley and young sub Keaton Webster all went close to restoring the two goal cushion, but Alport managed to see out the additional time to bank three valuable points to stay joint second in the table.
