Match report

Ashton Town 0 Alport 9

A stunning performance at strugglers Ashton Town led to a fourth successive league win for promotion chasing Alport. Their 9-0 mauling of Town was only the sixth time in the history of the North West Counties League that an away side had won by that margin, but Ashton were very lucky indeed that their goals against column didn’t taken even more of a pounding. Whitchurch were relentless throughout the match and poor old Ashton didn’t know what had hit them. They survived for half an hour but after that the finishing became far more clinical and there was only ever going to be one outcome.

Mike Blundell had already hit the bar before smashing home a penalty for the first of his four goals on the night, and once they were up and running Alport set about their prey like a lion with a gazelle. Blundell poached his second on the stroke of half-time shortly after PJ Hudson had buried a header following good play down the right flank and a sweet delivery from Nick Marley.

In the second half the Reds were unplayable. They marauded forward penning Town inside their own half for virtually the entire period. It was like pitching a lightweight novice into the ring with a Heavyweight World Champion and expecting him to go 12 rounds. The mis-match on the night was seismic.
Blundell completed his hat-trick with a neat header after 52 minutes and three minutes later Si Everall found the bottom corner to complete Alport’s nap hand. Sub Alex Hughes slipped youngster Luke Walley through just before the hour and the teenager showed composure beyond his years to make it six. With 20 minutes or so to go the Reds put on the afterburners with Blundell’s powerful volley quickly followed by another really good finish from Walley. And an own goal made it 9-0 with all three goals coming in a crazy five minutes. The post denied Marley a deserved tenth and Hughes saw his downward header somehow kept out by Town keeper Matt Hodge.

Alport’s travelling army made up just over half of the 101 crowd and they went away dreaming of promotion with just 5 games to go.
