Match report

Whitchurch Alport recorded their 5th pre-season victory and clean sheet as they defeated a Southport FC X1 5-0 at Yockings Park.

With just one week until the league campaign kicks off manager Luke Goddard again used the opportunity to rotate his squad including a rare appearance for himself. The youthful Southport side were energetic and determined in the first half looking to frustrate the Reds, as many wasteful passes went astray in the strong wind to keep the game goalless in the opening thirty minutes.  Granted good chances were created but Arron Johns fired high and wide in the 18 yard box, with both Leon Ashman and Joe Howell missing gilt edge opportunities from corner kicks. The persistency paid off though before half time with a swift attack led by Lee Pickerill, the winger coasted past his marker before firing a ball into Alex Hughes, he linked up with Johns and finished with his left foot beyond the visitors goalkeeper. HT 1-0

Now going against the wind in the second half the home side began to link up superbly well with some excellent football being played. Soon arrived the second goal after a combination of over twenty passes Matty Ashbrook played a one-two with skipper Simon Everall who slotted home to extend the lead. Everall soon gained his brace when more intricate play in the Southport box led to a foul on the skipper and he dispatched the penalty emphatically from 12 yards. The game was very much now in control for Alport, enjoying possession and constantly looking a threat when they moved forward with the ball. Credit must be given though to the Southport side who continued to try play themselves and look for opportunities on the counter attack. Phelps in goal was forced into a couple of saves and a superb tackle from Ashbrook late on ensured Alport`s impressive defensive record pre season continued.

In the final fifteen minutes Alport added two further goals, the fourth coming from a wonderful free kick from Nicky Porter and the fifth goal from Hughes who finished well from the edge of the 18 yard box after a good move down the left hand side. On the final whistle Johns missed a final chance that would’ve topped off another excellent team move. FT 5-0
