Match report

Whitchurch Alport completed their pre season schedule with a 3-0 defeat at Yockings Park against Evo Stik West side Leek Town.

The final fixture of a solid pre season for the Reds may have ended in defeat but it was an excellent workout against the strong Leek Town outfit but manager Luke Goddard will be disappointed to have picked up a few injuries. The Staffordshire side set the tempo early on looking comforatble on the ball and causing Alport issues with their movement in midfield. Despite this possession from the visitors the home side really should have taken some gilt edge opportunities on the break but they failed to work Ben Chapman in the Leek goal. A lesson was soon to be learnt as the Evo Stik side showed their clinical edge making the most of rare mistakes by Alports defence. Firstly Tim Grice beat Leon Ashman to a simple cross to flick past Dave Parton in goal to give the visitors the lead. Ten minutes later it was two nil, left back Louis James gifted the ball back to the opposition deep in the Alport half and after an initial shot blocked the ball found its way into the home goal from a combination of Grice and Ashman challenging. This set the tempo for much of the match now as Alport plugged away but lacked any fluency in possession or in the final third. HT 0-2

Into the second half and this was now a typical pre season friendly with both sides content and a poor third goal was gifted to Leek and that man Grice as he pounced in the 18yd box when Alport failed to clear their lines. Chances at both ends for the remainder of the match with Alport failing to finish off a couple of decent opportunities and Leek going close from long range on a couple of occassions. FT 0-3

Manager Luke Goddard summarised:

"Of course a disappointing result on paper given how solid we have been all pre season but I`m very glad weve had that sort of game in truth. We looked lethargic in the warm up and abit walking wounded even before we kicked a ball tonight and that showed in our errors and quality all over. It was a great opportunity for a few of the lads tonight to stake their claim to start this weekend with seven of our lads away, so it was a real character test that will stand us in good stead over the next ten months. Leek are a strong side and will go well in the league above this season so there is no harm in losing a pre season match but we`ve not represented ourselves well which is what is key for us as a Club. However after six weeks we look back with a new squad and new challenge ahead in terms of leagues and are very confident starting Saturday we are about to embrace the North West Counties Premier this season. Its going to be a rollercoaster with many highs and lows but everyone here will enjoy the next step in our history as we play at the highest level in our 72 year existence! See you Saturday!"
