Match Report
Whitchurch Alport 1 Squires Gate 1
A Jamie Thomas penalty four minutes from the end denied Alport a victory their endeavours perhaps deserved against feisty opposition in Squires Gate on Monday night.
Both sides ended the game a man light after Darren Campion and Ben Reader were both sent off either side of half time. Alport came into the game in fine form but still made changes to the side that had beaten Barnoldswick Town two days earlier.
The Reds started the game on the front foot and were really unlucky not to take the lead when Nicky Porter saw his audacious shot from outside the box bounce just the wrong side of the post after just six minutes. Moments later, Dan Skelton saw his goalbound effort strike colleague Aron Johns to take the sting out of the ball and make it an easier save than it would have been.
Right back Nick Marley got forward on several occasions putting over a number of excellent crosses but on each occasion no striker had taken a gamble when a goal ought to have materialised.
Just before the interval there was a huge flashpoint on the far touchline which saw Campion dismissed for allegedly striking an opponent and the teams went in level with the scoreline 0-0.
Reader got his just desserts with the second half just two minutes old. Committing a bad tackle just in front of the dugouts had the Alport bench screaming for the referee to be strong. Reader had been instrumental in Campions red card so got little sympathy from the home supporters when he got first dibs of the away team’s showers.
And within three minutes Everall had glanced a header in at the near post to put Whitchurch in command.
It was a lead that the home side would enjoy for more than half an hour. Led by the superb Leon Ashman, it was devastating that his tackle earned Gate a chance to restore parity. Thomas slotted the ball beautifully into the bottom corner with Dave Parton’s huge frame beaten despite going the right way.
Alport stood up to the physical challenge of a very well organised Squires Gate side and in the end a point for each side was probably the right result.
