HAT TRICK HERO ALEX HUGHES BACK IN THE GOALS

Local lad, Alex Hughes, is just one goal shy of 30 for the season after bagging another hat-trick at the weekend. Hughes – signed from Malpas four years ago – is in the best form of his career and playing at his highest level becoming the doyen of Yockings Park during that time. The striker hit a treble only last month in an FA Vase last 16 tie away at Coventry Sphinx and repeated the feat at home to Wolverhampton Casuals on Saturday. The KMJ Mortgages Stadium attracted a record sell-out crowd of 1200 just over a week ago and with slightly less in attendance (169) on Saturday, the Reds dominated from the outset and really the 3–1 scoreline didn’t reflect the dominance shown by Luke Goddard’s men. Only a stoppage time goal from the visitors was the nearest the ball came anywhere near Ellis Allen’s 18-yard box. It was important for Alport to restore a bit of form having lost their previous four matches including that heart-breaking quarter-final defeat last time out. Skipper, Sean Griffiths, paid tribute to the club’s top scorer, Hughes: “He is doing the town proud that’s for sure,” he said.” We have to be scoring goals from other areas as well though on the rare occasions that Hughesy has a bit of a drought.” Griffiths also said that the team’s belief has never altered: “We’re not used to losing football matches but this losing streak isn’t something that has affected the mood in the dressing rooms. We should be beating most of the sides in our league, even the ones at the top as that’s where Whitchurch Alport’s fantastic squad ought to be aiming for.” The Reds look forward to starting another run with three consecutive away games in the space of a week. First up are Stone Old Alleynians followed by a midweek trip to Stourport ending with a visit to Shifnal.
