Winstone saves point with last minute goal

Despite the best efforts of the weather to ruin the plans for today, a huge effort from the Alport volunteers made sure football was back at the KMJ Mortgages Stadium for the Alport Women, and we are incredibly grateful for the support of Craig and co. in getting our game on today!

The game saw Alport looking to press on from the last few fixtures that have seen a much more attack minded approach and it was clear that Alport were on the front foot again this afternoon, creating a number of clear chances within the opening minutes of the game, particularly from some great movement off the ball from Pritchard, and a creative role for Owen saw some brilliant play coming through the versatile youngster!

Even though the game was being dominated by Alport, it was Frodsham who took the lead on 34 minutes, where a good cross was deftly slotted in at Wenlock's near post.

After a tireless first 40 minutes, R. Cooper came off for Winstone, and it seemed the vice-captain was keen to get herself up the goalscoring table, running through the Frodsham defence and latching on to a great ball from Wenlock to slot the ball in for Alport's equaliser just before half time.

Second half saw a slight change in shape, with A. Roberts making her return from 2 month injury lay off, and there was plenty of good link up play to be seen despite the soft ground, particularly from James, A. Roberts and Ralphs in the midfield.

A particular highlight of the second half saw a fantastic individual run from E. Cooper, which saw her manage to wriggle free from three Frodsham players, before playing an incredible through pass for Winstone, only to have a last minute tackle made by the recovering Frodsham defender.

Even though Alport were created more chances and pushing to take the lead, a well delivered corner by Frodsham ended up sailing in directly over everyone, giving the visitors the lead once again on 65 minutes.

The remaining 25 minutes ended up looking a bit like an attack vs defence training drill, with Alport looking to get the equaliser and push on.

It wasn't until the very end of the game in the 89th minute, where another well threaded through ball fell to Winstone who calmly lifted the ball over the onrushing goalkeeper, drawing the game level with a few minutes left.

Unfortunately time was against Alport, as the ref blew for full time and ended another entertaining match in Whitchurch.

Manager's thoughts -

"After a fantastic weekend for the Club, despite the result yesterday, it was a great advert of what a fantastic job Luke and everyone at Whitchurch Alport FC have done to make the Club what it is today, and what is lined up for the future is only going to make things bigger and better for the town of Whitchurch and North Shropshire!

We have made some real steps forward in terms of where we want to be as a team in the last few weeks, and I think the next step naturally for us would be to turn these draws into wins, and I'd say the last two fixtures in particular are games that we will need to start looking at as points dropped, rather than points gained. Having said that, the fight and belief that we were never beaten today was a great highlight, and something that I'm sure previously may well have led to heads dropping and giving in.

Every single player put their all in today, and as we enter the last 4 games of the league, it gives us chance to see what we can do in those games."

Next week will see Alport head across to ex-Cheshire Premier side, Egerton, which saw a thriller back in October with the score 3-3, which we'll release more information about throughout the week!
