Goddard's men battle to 2-0 home win over NWCL opposition

After we were let down at the last minute yesterday, Prestwich Heys from the NWCL stepped in at short notice as they came to visit the KMJ Mortgages Stadium as Luke Goddard's men continued their pre-season schedule prior to the new Midlands League campaign.

The Alport ground out a deserved 2-0 victory thanks to 2nd half goals from Skelton and Yeardley. On a hot and humid afternoon in Shropshire, Goddard was able to call upon a squad of 20 for this game and was able to rotate his squad well. Alex Hughes had the ball in the net on 6 minutes but the referee's assistant has his flag raised and the goal was ruled out for offside. Minutes later Prestwich hit the post after their attacker was afforded too much time and space, but luckily for Ash Rawlins, the shot cannoned off the post with the Alport keeper beaten.

Going into the 2nd half, the Reds stepped up their game and the midfield trio of Sean Griffiths, James Rowlands and Jordan Evans started to get a stranglehold on the game which culminated in the opening goal courtesy of two of Goddard's substitutes. Young Joe Flory's shot was well saved and Dan Skelton was on hand to put away the rebound. The Reds doubled their lead on 81 minutes through another Sub, Sam Yeardley. An back post corner from Jordan Evans was met by Kielahn Annikey, who headed the ball back into the danger area and Yeardley was on hand to head home from 6 yards

Another good work out. Next up for the Reds is a trip to Northern Premier League West Division side Kidsgrove Athletic next Saturday(23rd July)
